Buying A Used Sailboat

One of the big advantages of buying a used boat is that it is likely to be better outfitted than its newer counterpart. There is, of course, a certain excitement to being the first one to sail a new boat, but that excitement can wane dramatically when you realize that you are also the first one to have to outfit the boat. Choosing the right sails, anchor, and power generator isn't easy, and it's often a relief to purchase a boat where someone has already done this work for you. It is important to note, however, that if the used boat's equipment is over ten to 15 years old, chances are it will have to be replaced regardless.

Some consumers are wary of used sailboats, however, because they don't want to buy "other people's problems." As with any used product, you have to be careful when purchasing a sailboat and make sure you know the exact condition of the boat, as well as any work that was done to it. Having pictures of the boat is nice, but a firsthand visual inspection as well as a test sail are both advisable, especially if you're purchasing the boat completely unaided by a broker.
